Help protect our wild places! Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful and untouched sanctuary for Alaskan wildlife. Desire for domestic oil has brought this land under the eyes of many government officials, who wish to deface the land in order to extract oil from the coastal plains region of this refuge. This region is a very sensitive and vital area for the refuge. Global warming trends have caused the permafrost of the coastal plains to thin, and drilling in this area would exacerbate this process. The coastal plains area is also an important place to protect over 240 species, including porcupine caribou and the nearly extinct polar bear. Oil drilling is a dangerous and messy business and, as we have seen recently with the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, oil spills can be very common and very deadly. The nearby Prudhoe Bay oil site in Alaska shows the devastating long term effects of oil drilling, as this drilling has caused over 500 oil spills in its life and has led to over 100 contaminated sites in the Northern Slope of Alaska. Oil drilling at Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will lead to the destruction of the coastal plains, causing the extinction the unique species that depend on this region. We can help protect this land. Stand up against oil drilling, demand a government ban of oil drilling at Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to prevent destruction! It is our duty to protect and cherish this land, so that it will thrive for many generations to come.
